Born in Kobe city in Hyogo prefecture in 1940. Graduated from Tama University of Fine Art, Tokyo. He is an emeritus professor of the University of Tsukuba, Institute of Art and Design. He starts to present art works in the 1960s, and in 1965 he formed an art group “グループ＜位＞ – Group＜I＞” with artists lived in Kobe. In 1968, he had his first solo exhibition ” DARK” (Muramatsu Gallery, Tokyo) and in 1973, he participated in the 8th Paris biennale (Paris Museum of Modern Art), and The São Paulo Art Biennial in Brazil. Kawaguchi incorporates various elements such as words, objects, energy, time and so on into his works, and he works on the theme of “relations” between those elements. These art works are presented in a unique way, without being constrained by existing forms of expression. In the production process, he combines natural things such as plants, water, and air, with metals such as lead and iron, and sometimes he uses heating up and corroding.
